VÍCTOR DE SOUZA
I had the honor of interviewing one of
the most current and successful Latin designers. Born in Buenos Aires,
Argentina, and of Portuguese descent, Victor
De Souza has triumphed worldwide with his original designs which
combine a pinch of tradition, another of elegance, a lot of sensuality,
eroticism and definitely a lot of vanguards. Recognized for his perfectionism, Souza
is partly responsible for singer, Lady Gaga’s unique look,
along with celebrities like Rihanna, and Sarah
Jessica Parker.
Victor, how did you start in fashion
design?
Fashion has always been my goal; my
destiny, which is why it came to me so spontaneously in life. As a child, I
designed clothes for my sister’s dolls so she could dress them up; I used the
materials which I found in my grandmother’s closet. She was of great influence
in my style; she was enchanting and very elegant. In her closet, she had
outfits, shoes and gloves in all tones. I remember, in particular, a beautiful Christian
Dior dress that she’d wear very elegantly.
What do you use as inspiration in the
creation of a new garment?
I have a complete vision of the woman I
want to dress; then, I make a mosaic and create a puzzle of fabrics and
texture. For example, in my last collection, LE CARNIVAL DU DESTIN,
which I presented in New York, I visualized the complete collection. Something
like a vanishing picture which has to be put back together. I start with the
sketches, colors and materials, and little by little I recreate those images
that come to my mind like a divine gift.
Before being a designer you were a
model. How was your experience in the modeling industry?
It was really surprising because I
didn’t have to do anything more than maintain a good body. I liked the idea of
having someone do my makeup and hair. It was really the opposite of what I do
as a designer. It is a job that doesn’t end, where one has to ensure that
everything takes place. Nonetheless, modeling allowed me the opportunity to pay
for college.
What styles do you favor most, and for
what kind of women do you design?
I love cocktail dresses.
They’re very versatile, they can be used during the day with a jacket, and
without, they can be ideal for the evening. My clothing has a lot of form, in
fact, I’m known mainly for dancing dresses. I like that the women who carry my
designs feel confident, are elegant, modern, sure of themselves. A woman that
knows her style, that has class, is one that is here today and tomorrow in any
place in the world, but always maintaining her personality and elegance. My
creations are made to inspire assurance, personality, and attitude. This is why
people like them so much.
Victor lives and works in the city he
considers his home: New York, “it is the place where he’ll stay forever,” are
his own words, as he finds that this city allows him to be himself.

Tuve
el honor de entrevistar a uno de los diseñadores latinos más exitoso del
momento. Nacido en Buenos Aires, Argentina, de familia de origen Portugués,
Víctor De Souza ha triunfado mundialmente con sus originales diseños que
combinan una pizca de tradición, otra de elegancia, bastante de sensualidad,
exotismo y definitivamente, mucho de vanguardista. Reconocido por su
perfeccionismo, Souza es uno de los responsables del look tan
singular de la cantante norteamericana Lady Gaga, y también, es el
elegido por celebridades como Rihanna y Sarah Jessica Parker.
Víctor,
¿Cómo te inicias en el diseño de moda?
La
moda ha sido siempre mi objetivo; mi destino. Por eso se dio de forma tan
espontánea en mi vida. De niño le diseñaba ropa a las muñecas de mi hermana
para que ella las vistiera; usaba las telas que encontraba en el armario de mi
abuela. Ella fue de gran influencia en mi estilo; era encantadora, muy
elegante. En su armario tenia trajes, zapatos y guantes en todos los tonos.
Recuerdo especialmente un hermoso vestido de Christian Dior que ella
lucia con gran elegancia.
¿En
qué te inspiras para crear una nueva prenda?
Tengo
una visión completa de la mujer que quiero vestir, luego, hago como un mosaico
y formo un rompecabezas de telas y texturas. Por ejemplo, en mi última
colección LE CARNIVAL DU DESTIN, la cual presenté en NY, visualicé
la colección completa. Algo así como una foto que se desvanece y que hay que
armar nuevamente. Empiezo con los dibujos, colores y materiales, y poco a poco
recreo aquellas imágenes que vienen a mi mente como un regalo divino.
Antes
de diseñador fuiste modelo, ¿Cómo fue tu experiencia en la industria del
modelaje?
Fue
realmente sorprendente porque no tenía que hacer más que conservar un buen
cuerpo. Me gustaba la idea de que hicieran mi maquillaje y arreglaran mi
cabello. Fue realmente lo contrario a lo que hago como un diseñador. Es un
trabajo que no para, hay que hacer que todo suceda. Sin embargo, el modelaje me
proporcionó la forma de costear mi Universidad.
¿Cuáles
son los estilos que más te gustan y para que mujer diseñas?
Me
encantan los vestidos de cóctel. Son muy versátiles, pueden usarse de
día con un saco y, sin él, pueden ser ideales para la noche. Mi ropa tiene
mucha forma, de hecho, me conocen principalmente por los vestidos de baile. Me
gusta que la mujer que lleve mis diseños sienta confianza, que sea elegante,
moderna, segura de sí misma. Una mujer que conoce su estilo, que tiene clase,
es aquella que está hoy aquí y mañana en cualquier otro lugar del mundo, pero
siempre manteniendo su personalidad y elegancia. Mis creaciones son hechas para
dar seguridad, personalidad, actitud. Esa es la razón por la que la gente gusta
tanto de ellas.
Víctor
vive y trabaja desde hace más de 10 años en la ciudad que considera su hogar:
Nueva York, “es el lugar donde estará por siempre” según sus palabras, ya que
esta mágica ciudad, le permite ser él mismo.

LOVE IN THE GOLDEN YEARS

Most people associate love with zest, the strength of youth, the passion and the eroticism of falling in love as an adolescent or young adult, because youngsters have the sensuality close to the surface and an acute eroticism that makes them tremble with desire. Does this mean that for the older adult it is impossible to find that soul mate with whom to be happy? Not at all!
The world tends to think, mistakenly,
that with the passing of the years, the right to love and to enjoy sex
disappears. Similarly, people who’ve surpassed the age of 60 feel that time has
taken with it their chance to be happy along with that of finding their soul
mate. The reality is that there is no age, space or time that can deny a human
being the possibility of giving themselves fully to another while in love.
Provided one’s alive, the heart will keep on beating; love knocks on the door
at any moment’s notice and doesn’t ask for the age. As is the beautiful and
renowned case of Allan Marks and Lillian Hartley for whom love arrived at their
door during their golden years. The couple broke the Guinness World Records by
getting married in an intimate ceremony at the age of 98 and 95 respectively.
Endless love knows no age and can
embrace any soul at any given moment. Allowing yourself the opportunity to love
during the golden years is to open your arms to life. In the “third youth” love
is lived with the calmness and the tenderness of maturity; love transcends and
passion is accompanied by the softness of respect and solidarity, a more gentle
love emerges, more loyal, more stable.
Anyone who has lived the transcendence
of love learns that there are no winners or losers as we indulge in the joy of
getting old together and sharing up to the last breath of happiness.
For those who wish to enjoy a dignified
and beautiful love during the golden years, only allow your love to go from
ephemeral to endless and from carnal to spiritual. There is no age, fears, or
prejudices that can stop a love that makes two hearts beat and one that is
inviting of an eternal embrace.

La
mayoría de personas asocian el amor con el brío, la fuerza de la juventud, la
pasión y el erotismo del enamoramiento en la adolescencia y la adultez joven,
debido a que los jóvenes tienen la sensualidad a flor de piel y un agudo
erotismo que los hace temblar de deseo. ¿Significa esto que para los de mayor
edad no es posible conseguir esa alma gemela con quien ser felices? ¡Nada de
eso!
La
tendencia en el mundo es a pensar, erróneamente, que con los años se pierde el
derecho a amar y a disfrutar sexualmente. Asimismo, las personas que han pasado
los 60 años sienten que el tiempo se llevó con él, su oportunidad de ser
felices y de conseguir su alma gemela. La realidad es que no hay edad, espacio,
ni momento que le niegue a un ser humano la posibilidad de entregarse a otro en
el amor. El corazón sigue latiendo mientras se esté viviendo, el amor toca
puertas en cualquier momento, y no pregunta edades. Es el hermoso y renombrado
caso de Allan Marks y Lillian Hartley, a quienes el amor del bueno les llegó en
los años dorados. La pareja rompió el Record Guinness al contraer matrimonio en
una boda muy íntima a los 98 y 95 años.
Un
infinito amor no sabe de edades y puede acariciar un alma en cualquier momento.

In actuality, most women of all nationalities like painting their nails; a custom originating in China. In ancient times, in this country, the long thin fingers of women were considered beautiful, but not all were born with beautiful hands and that’s why some ladies decided to add decorations to their nails, so that their fingers would appear longer.
This tradition has expanded throughout the years, and; nowadays, this alternative is as original as it is extravagant. The hands are one of the most exposed parts of our body and because of it, one of the most looked at. The way in which you care for them says a lot about who you are, so your hands will be much more presentable if they’re neat, painted or decorated. This creative activity is a type of art which is also very fashionable. Currently, there are many shops that trade in the so called "nail bars"; prefabricated nail designs that recreate decorations for all occasions, from the elegant French manicure, to fruit, cartoons, flowers, Christmas, animal, Halloween, dice, desserts and any decor imaginable. They’re all fun, attractive, elegant, and even grotesque. There’s a great variety, you choose!
The beginning of this revolutionary fashion starts with artificial nails that are glued on and last a few hours or a few days at most. The packages come with their own adhesive and are sold in pharmacies and beauty supply stores.
Subsequently, false nails are made from ABS plastic, which have a texture similar to flexible acrylic and are manufactured in series. This market is mainly aimed at the working class; it does not require an expert for placement and lasts one to two days.
Gel or linen nails are made of plastic; they already have a defined size and shape, which does not always guarantee that it will adhere over an original nail. In the case of gel nails, the procedure involves applying several layers of this material and drying it with a black light, then, the nails are filed. With linen nails, several layers of cloth are applied and polished when finished.
Acrylic or porcelain nails are certainly the most recommended, as they adapt perfectly to an original nail, giving it a completely natural appearance. Its application requires the use of a mold and acrylic to give it the shape desired, and it is subsequently smoothed out. Colored acrylic nails are an excellent alternative for those who do not wish to paint their nails too often being that the color doesn’t fade away. Intense tones, neon or very bright, will mark the fashion trends for 2013 in the field of nail art, especially in the summer season.

Actualmente, a la mayoría de mujeres de todas las nacionalidades les gusta pintarse las uñas; una costumbre originaria de la China. En la antigüedad, en este país, los dedos largos y delgados de las mujeres eran considerados hermosos, mas no todas nacían con manos bonitas. Fue por ello que algunas damas decidieron añadir decoraciones a sus uñas, de manera que sus dedos lucieran más largos.
Esta tradición se ha extendido a lo largo de los años y hoy en día es una alternativa tan original como extravagante. Las manos son una de las partes más expuestas de nuestro cuerpo y por ello, una de las más observadas. La manera como las llevamos dice mucho de quien somos, así que tus manos quedarán mucho más presentables si están prolijas, pintadas o decoradas. Esta creativa actividad es un tipo de arte que además está muy de moda. Actualmente existen innumerables tiendas que comercian las denominadas "barras de uñas"; diseños de uñas prefabricadas que recrean decoraciones para toda ocasión, desde el elegante manicure francés, hasta frutas, dibujos animados, arreglos florales, navideños, de animales, halloween, dados, postres y cualquier imaginable decoración. Todas, divertidas, atractivas, elegantes y hasta grotescas. Hay una gran variedad, tú elijes!
El comienzo de esta revolucionaria moda se da con las uñas artificiales que se colocan con pegamento y que duran algunas horas, o a lo mucho, un par de días. Los paquetes contienen su propio adhesivo y se venden en farmacias y tiendas de productos de belleza.
Posteriormente se han fabricado uñas postizas a base de plástico ABS, el cual tiene una textura parecida al acrílico flexible; éstas se manufacturan en serie. El mercado está principalmente dirigido a la clase popular, no requiere de un experto para su colocación y su duración es de uno a dos días.
Las uñas de gel o lino son de plástico, tienen un tamaño y una forma ya definida, lo que no garantiza que siempre se puedan adherir sobre la uña original.
Para las uñas de gel, el procedimiento consiste en aplicar varias capas de este material y secarlo con luz negra, luego las uñas se liman.
En las uñas de lino se aplican varias capas de tela, y finalmente se pulen.
Las uñas de acrílico o porcelana son sin duda las más aconsejables, ya que se adaptan perfectamente a la uña original, dando una apariencia absolutamente natural. Su aplicación consiste en utilizar un molde y acrílico para ir dándole la forma que se desee, posteriormente se alisan.
Las uñas de acrílico con color son una excelente alternativa para quienes no desean pintarse las uñas muy seguido, ya que no se despintan. Tonos intensos, neones o muy vivos, marcarán las tendencias de la moda para el 2013 en materia de decoración de uñas, sobre todo en la temporada de verano.

It
is estimated in the millions the number of pets that end up in shelters up for
adoption or possible termination. The primary reason for this is the plain and
simple fact that people desire owning a pet without realizing the
responsibilities that take precedence in making this decision.
If
your child wants a pet, have you taken into consideration what this really
means? Owning a pet takes on constant financing. There is food and up keep but
most important are medical expenses.
An
adult must be ready to handle every aspect. Done right a child can learn the
meaning of responsibility while developing a loving relationship which will
bring lessons and happy experiences for many years. Among those lessons at some
point come the harsh lessons dealing with illness, injury health care and
ultimately the animals passing. These are all parts of true life and
companionship.
When
your child asks for a pet, you must ask yourself whether you are ready to take
on the sometimes neglected duties. Are you ready to take on giving this pet its
meals, its baths, its walks and take it to the vet regularly. Like a child a
pet needs attention. When attention is not given that pet will retaliate or
develop behavioral problems that need to be addressed. Getting rid of or
dumping a pet at a shelter should never be an option because that pet did not
ask for nor deserves such a fate. If you were fed up with your child's behavior
would you consider dropping them off at a shelter for possible termination?
The
final result when all is done correctly is a lifetime of unconditional love and
an immeasurable amount of life enhancing and altering experiences which can
develop in a growing child a sense of responsibility and sharing like no other
experience. For the adult the ultimate reward is the love and admiration as
well as bonding with both child and pet.
Before
you say yes to getting a pet you must ask yourself, “Am I ready to take this
on?"

ESTAS LISTO PARA TENER UNA MASCOTA?
Se estima en millones el número de mascotas que
terminan en refugios para adopción o posibles sacrificios. La razón principal
para este número exorbitante es el simple hecho de que la gente desee tener una
mascota sin tener en cuenta las responsabilidades que contrae tomar esta
decisión.
Si su pequeño quiere una mascota, ¿Ha considerado
realmente lo que esto implica? Tener una mascota conlleva una responsabilidad
financiera continua; el costo de los alimentos, el mantenimiento, y más
importante, los gastos médicos.
Un adulto debe de estar preparado para manejar cada
aspecto Si se hace correctamente, el niño puede aprender el significado de la
responsabilidad mientras desarrolla una relación cariñosa con la mascota, lo
cual le brindará lecciones y experiencias felices por muchos años. Entre estas
lecciones llega en algún momento la dura tarea de lidiar con enfermedades,
heridas, y en última instancia con la muerte de los animales. Todo esto forma
parte de la vida real y del compañerismo.
Cuando su hijo te pida una mascota, pregúntese si está
listo para asumir los a veces no tan buenos compromisos. ¿Está listo para
proporcionar y darle a esta mascota sus comidas, sus baños, sus caminatas y
llevarla al veterinario con regularidad? Tal como un niño, una mascota necesita
atención. Cuando la atención no se da, la mascota toma represalias o desarrolla
problemas de conducta que requieren atención. Deshacerse de la mascota, o
abandonarla en un refugio jamás debe ser una opción, porque la mascota no pidió
ni merece ese destino. Piénselo de esta manera, si estuviera harto con la
conducta de su hijo ¿Consideraría dejarlo en un refugio para que posiblemente
lo sacrifiquen?
El resultado final cuando se hacen las cosas
correctamente es en una vida llena de amor incondicional y una inconmensurable
calidad de vida; experiencias que pueden desarrollar en un niño en crecimiento,
un sentido de responsabilidad y el aprender a compartir; experiencias como
ninguna otra. Para el adulto, la recompensa final es el amor y admiración, así
como la vinculación con el niño y la mascota.
Así que, antes de decir si a la adopción de una
mascota, asegúrese de preguntarse: ¿Estoy listo para hacerlo?

All of us have
dreams and fantasies, but fear of the unknown very often holds us back. There
are many people, “regular” people who courageously overcome their fears or
limitations and manage to accomplish many things for which they don’t receive
the recognition they deserve; these people become EXTRAordinary and
inspire us to follow in their footsteps.
Todos tenemos sueños y fantasías, pero el miedo a lo desconocido muchas veces nos detiene. Hay muchísimas personas, gente del “común”, que superan con valentía sus temores o limitaciones y que logran hacer cosas por las que pocas veces reciben el reconocimiento que se merecen, estas personas se convierten en EXTRAordinarias y nos inspiran a seguir su ejemplo.
Following his
father’s disease, David Alzate, a young Colombian Systems Engineer,
ventured to jump out of a plane at an altitude of 13,500ft with winds of 150
miles/hour pressing against his face; thus, overcoming his fear of freefalling.
Parachuting
then became his favorite sport: “The sensation is indescribable, impacting and
unforgettable; feeling how the energy flows, the adrenaline, the feeling of
flying in such total freedom is something every person show allow him/herself
to experience.”

Él es un hombre de entereza y gran sentido del humor, fue deportista hasta hace 4 años cuando le diagnosticaron Esclerosis Lateral Amiotrófica (ELA), enfermedad degenerativa de tipo neuromuscular en la cual se pierde todo tipo de movimiento; esta experiencia cambió mi forma de ver la vida y me inspira cada día a agradecer y a disfrutar al máximo todo lo que puedo hacer”
Tras la enfermedad de su padre, David Alzate, un joven colombiano ingeniero de sistemas, se aventuró a saltar de una avioneta de 13.500 pies de altura con la presión del viento contra su cara a 150 millas por hora, venciendo así el miedo a la caída libre. El paracaidismo se convirtió en su deporte favorito: “La sensación es indescriptible, impactante e inolvidable; el sentir como fluye la energía, la adrenalina, el sentirte volar en un estado de libertad total es algo que toda persona debería permitirse vivir”
