Patricia Michelle De León, Miss Panamá 1995, is now a recognized model,
presenter, Hollywood and Latin television actress and the image of many
advertising campaigns. Her role in series and movies like Cold Case, Crossing
Jordan, The Chicago Code, Ghost Whisperer, Love Orchard and Men
of a Certain Age -where she acted next to actor Ray Romano from the
series Everybody Loves Raymond- and her more recent work in Magic
City, La Ruta Blanca, Bad Ass and Pool Boys, have
given her recognition in the Anglo world. This has also allowed her the
opportunity to showcase important magazine covers like Vanidades, Ocean
Drive, OnFitness, Soho, Sunset Drive, Maxim and
now, LATINO SHOW MAGAZINE.
But aside from acting, this beautiful
Panamanian has distinguished herself as a presenter of the prestigious Billboard
Awards and in shows like La Corte Del Pueblo, in addition to her
acting in soaps like Perro Amor of Telemundo/NBC; an extensive
journey that places her on the list of “successful Latinas.”
But behind this busy world of film and television, is a
fun woman, with close family ties and a deep interest for the health of the
Latin community. This is why De Leon joined the organization PETA,
“to support a vegetarian and healthy diet for her community,” a deeply
passionate topic for her because she is a tireless advocate of animals, and the
reason why in a PETA campaign, she dressed in an elegant deep red and
with a determined look hugged a bull to highlight a sign that screams:
“Tradition is NO excuse for cruelty. Don’t support bullfighting.”
Patricia De León is also an entrepreneur; her shoe line Diosa
and perfume Lingerie, both by Patricia de León will launch in
2013.
In order to get to know a little bit more this
professional and charismatic woman who’s known for her spontaneity and good
sense of humor, I’ll leave you with a few questions she answered in our
interview:
Patricia is a very Latin name. Did you ever
consider changing it for an artistic one? “No. The truth is I never thought about it. I love my
name. I know it is a very Latin name, I think it’s why I identify with it so
well.”
After winning the
Miss Panamá pageant, you modeled and are now widely known in the
small screen and in the American film industry. Did the Miss Panamá crown
open doors in your career as an actress? “Miss Panamá was my opportunity to enter through the entertainment
door, but, my other destiny was to practice law since it was the career I
studied for.”
How does a
Panamanian queen end up in Hollywood? “How? -Laughing- there are times that even I ask
myself that as I look at the journey. I arrived with one hand in front and
another in the back, with tenacity, faith, hope, with the support of my mother
and people who believed in me, and clinging by the hand of God.”
You speak perfect
English. How did you learn? “Ohhh!
Thank you for the perfect part, because it cost me! And I don’t mean
money, because when I arrived, I didn’t have any, but in effort. I learned it
by ear, listening to the radio and reading the newspaper, I read my manuscripts
with a dictionary in hand, of course, it took me hours! –She laughs-
because it was practically translating a screenplay from English to Spanish,
but thank God those days are behind.”
Many successful
women are single and/or have no kids. A woman as beautiful and successful as
you has many suitors from where to choose. Is it hard for you to choose among
the many opportunities? And
laughing out loud she says: “Even though I’m very committed to my career, at
this time I want to give priority to my personal life, but it’s still hard for me
to find a man willing to keep up with my work rhythm, that accepts my
profession and most important, that is willing to discover who I am as a human
being.”
Many women want
to know the “secret” of success. Do you really think there is a secret to being
successful? “A secret not so much, no,
but I do think there is a logical formula. If you don’t have FAITH, you
won’t try, if you don’t PREPARE, it is impossible to advance, if you don’t
FOCUS, you won’t have clear what you want and how to get it. And PERSEVERANCE
and PATIENCE go hand in hand, because when we fall and get back up, it is what
teaches and strengthens us to better appreciate our triumphs. That is my
formula!
Are you vain? I think there is no woman without vanity, especially when
we talk about the Latin woman.
When you look at
yourself in the mirror, do you see a Hollywood star or a woman who like any
other can have fears or doubts about herself? “I’m a normal woman, like any other, with fears, doubts
and insecurities, sensitive… made of flesh and blood like any other.”
You’re a great
advocate of animals. What is the energy that brings you closer to the animal
kingdom? “As a child I was
surrounded by animals. I spent a lot of time with my parents at the farms, with
cows, chickens, pigs, ducks; there was no animal on those lands that I didn’t
chase just to be with them. They’re beings given to us to protect and care for,
not to mistreat or abuse them.”
The most
recognized pictures of Patricia de León show both, an extremely elegant
and super sexy woman. Where do you draw the line between sensuality and
glamour? “There is always an
occasion for everything. A woman can be sexy and elegant at the same time. The
line between the glamorous and sexy or between sensuality and glamour is not a
dividing line. Glamour is sensual by nature, they go hand in hand, and I don’t
exclude either one. One can be sensual in a glamorous way as long as vulgarity
and tackiness are set aside.”
Do you like New
York? Do you see yourself in any project in this city? “Absolutely! I love this beautiful city. Everything is so
real; you breathe the adrenaline of the people.”
What’s the legacy
you leave your Latin community following your ascending career in the Anglo
world? “That everything is
possible when you want it. Backwards, not even to gain momentum my people.”

Pero
detrás de todo este mundo ocupado del cine y la televisión, se encuentra una
mujer divertida, apegada aún a su familia y profundamente interesada en la
salud de la comunidad Latina. Es por eso que De León, se unió a la
organización PETA, “para apoyar una dieta vegetariana y saludable para su
comunidad”, un tema que la apasiona profundamente porque además, es una
defensora incansable de los animales, fue por eso que en una campaña con PETA,
se vistió elegantemente de rojo profundo y con una mirada determinante, abraza
a un toro para resaltar un letrero que grita: “La tradición no es una
excusa para la crueldad. No apoye las corridas de toro”
Patricia
De León es además una mujer empresaria, su línea de zapatos Diosa
y su perfume Lingerie, ambos by Patricia de León, serán lanzados
este año 2013 al mercado.
Y
para conocer un poco más sobre esta profesional y carismática mujer, a quien
todos conocen por su espontaneidad y buen sentido del humor, les dejo con las
preguntas que respondió en nuestra entrevista:
Patricia es un nombre muy latino
¿Pensaste alguna vez en cambiar tu nombre propio por uno artístico? “No.
La verdad, nunca lo pensé. Me encanta mi nombre. Sé que es un nombre muy
latino, por eso creo que me identifica muy bien”
Después de ganar el reinado Miss
Panamá, has modelado y ahora eres reconocida en la pantalla chica y en el
cine norteamericano. ¿La corona de Miss Panamá te abrió puertas en tú
carrera como actriz? “Miss Panamá fue mi oportunidad para
entrar por la puerta del entretenimiento, mas mi otro destino era ejercer mi
profesión como abogada, ya que esa fue la carrera que estudié”
¿Cómo llega una reina panameña a
Hollywood? “¿Cómo? -Carcajadas- hay veces que yo misma me lo
pregunto al mirar el recorrido. Llegué con una mano adelante y otra atrás, con
tenacidad, con fe, con esperanza, con el apoyo de mi madre y de personas que
creyeron en mí y eso sí, agarradísima de la mano de Dios”
Hablas un inglés perfecto. ¿Cómo lo
aprendiste? “Huyyy! gracias por lo de perfecto, porque cómo me costó!
Y no en dinero, ya que cuando llegué no lo tenía, pero en esfuerzos,
pues lo aprendí de oído; a punta de radio y leyendo el periódico, leía mis
guiones con un diccionario, claro! me tomaba horas, -Carcajada- ya que
era prácticamente traducir un guión del inglés al español, pero gracias a Dios
ya esos días pasaron”
Muchas mujeres exitosas están solteras
y/o sin hijos. Una mujer tan guapa y exitosa como tú tiene muchos pretendientes
de dónde escoger. ¿Se te hace difícil elegir entre tantas oportunidades? Y
riéndose con muchas ganas dice: “A pesar de estar muy comprometida con mi
carrera, en este momento quiero darle prioridad a mi vida personal, pero
todavía me cuesta encontrar al hombre que esté dispuesto a seguir mi ritmo de
trabajo, que acepte mi profesión y lo más importante, que se atreva a descubrir
quién soy como ser humano”
Muchas mujeres quieren saber el
"Secreto" del éxito. ¿Crees que realmente hay un secreto para ser
exitosa? “Tanto como secreto, no, pero sí pienso que
existe una fórmula de lógica. Si no tienes FE, no te atreves, si no te PREPARAS
es imposible desarrollar, si no te ENFOCAS, no tienes bien claro lo que quieres
y cómo conseguirlo. Y la PERSEVERANCIA y la PACIENCIA van de la mano, ya que el
caernos y levantarnos es lo que nos enseña y nos fortalece para apreciar
nuestros triunfos. Esa es mi fórmula!
¿Eres vanidosa? Creo
que no hay mujer sin vanidad, especialmente cuando hablamos de la mujer Latina.
Cuando te miras al espejo. ¿Ves a la
estrella de Hollywood, o a la mujer que como cualquier otra puede tener miedos
o dudas sobre si misma? “Soy una mujer normal, como cualquier otra,
con miedos, con dudas, con inseguridades, sensible... de carne y hueso como
cualquier otra”
Eres una gran defensora de los
animales. ¿Cuál es la energía que te une al reino animal? “Desde
muy pequeña estuve rodeada de animales. Compartía mucho tiempo con mi padre en
las fincas; vacas, pollos, puercos, patos, no habían animales en esas tierras a
los que yo no correteara para estar junto a ellos. Son seres que se nos dieron
para tener la oportunidad de cuidar y proteger, y no para maltratar o
abusar de ellos”
Las fotos más reconocidas de Patricia
de León muestran tanto a una mujer súper elegante, como a una mujer súper
sexy. ¿Dónde se marca la línea entre la sensualidad y el glamur? “Siempre
hay una ocasión para todo. Una mujer puede ser sexy y elegante a la misma vez.
La línea entre lo glamuroso y lo sexy o entre la sensualidad y el glamur, no es
una línea divisoria. El glamur es sensual por naturaleza, van de la mano, yo no
excluyo a ninguna de las dos. Se puede ser sensual de una forma glamurosa
mientras se deje la vulgaridad y la “chabacanería” a un lado”
¿Te gusta Nueva York? ¿Te verías
realizando algún proyecto en esta ciudad? “Absolutamente. Me encanta
esa hermosa ciudad. Es tan real todo, respiras la adrenalina de la gente”
¿Cuál es el legado que le dejas a tu
comunidad Latina tras tu ascendente carrera en el mundo anglosajón? “Que
todo es posible cuando se quiere. Pa' atrás, ni pa' coger impulso mi gente”
“Los
