LORRAINE C. LADISH

LORRAINE C. LADISH
EDITOR IN CHIEF OF MAMIVERSE.COM

Lorraine C. Ladish is a modern woman born in Spain to a Spaniard father and an American mother who raised her in Pittsburgh, PA and in Madrid, Spain. Between her genes and that of her close relatives one finds a cultural mix, all of which have fortified her and made her feel universal. Her grandfather had a print shop, and like her father, he was also a writer.

As a young girl she was very introverted because she used to feel fat and ugly. At 15 years old she struggled with bulimia and anorexia; and it was from this tough experience that her first book was born: I Feel Fat, which in less than a month became news in the papers and on TV, because it wasn’t a novel but a personal experience. “I noticed that the subject was treated with sensationalism” says Lorraine. “Nevertheless, I continued writing about my experiences which turned into successful books on growth and self improvement, among them: Inner Beauty, The Challenge of Writing and Publishing, I’m Pregnant. Now What?, Starting from Scratch, and the most recent, The Journal to Success, which I hold very dear because it was born from a blog that I started writing during the recession, in 2008. I wasn’t working but I had a lot of financial responsibilities, my relationship with my ex spouse was wasn’t good, and I had to move forward with my two daughters. I thought that there had to be more people in a similar situation as mine and started searching for some light in the midst of darkness. My work was welcomed in the magazine Hola in Spain and as I wrote the blog, I went ahead with the book and when I finished editing it, I had overcome all my financial, professional and emotional issues. It was a great experience.”

Lorraine was editor of VOXXI Mujer, the Hispanic voice of the XXI century, and managing editor of the column Consejos de Mamá in the news portal About.com in Spanish. She’s currently the Editor in Chief of Mamiverse.com, geared to English speaking Latin mothers; she’s a professional translator and author of 17 books.

Today, at age 50, Lorraine C. Ladish, is living in Florida with her two precious daughters, Chloe and Alexia, and her spouse’s son, Finn. She enjoys an excellent relationship with Phillippe, who along with her followers, sees her as an example and with whom she feels fulfilled, serene and patient because she realizes that she’s at the peak of her life.

LORRAINE C. LADISH

DESIGNER CESAR GALINDO

CESAR GALINDO
A FASHION VISIONARY

César Galindo is an accomplished master designer and creative visionary of Mexican descent who attributes a lot of his natural talents to his family. He’s featured on Elle magazine, collaborated with Dolce & Gabbana, Lamb by Gwen Stefani, celebrities like Joan Jett, Britney Spears, and recently Justin Timberlake, who at the 2013 VMA’s showed off his work.

Upon entering his showroom in NYC, I was hit with a blast of color, vibrancy, and vast spread of fabrics from which César created breathtaking pieces. This is what he told LATINO SHOW MAGAZINE in an exclusive interview:

“From my father, a great engineer, I inherited the business side and from my mother, a craftsperson who made her own clothes, my art. My mother, who knitted and knew how to make just about anything, was my biggest critic which is why I always made sure to make her feel proud of seeing me put my name on something finished like that.

When Carmen, the youngest of my sisters was getting married, she tore magazine pictures of wedding dresses; she liked this part of one dress, and this part of another, everything was in components. I drew her dress, and it got made. That’s when I realized I wanted to be a designer.”

After these words I asked him the following:

-What do you think defines fashion today in New York and what’s coming next season?
Fashion has changed, people now wear color; New York was a black, white, grey, maybe navy blue city. Even though it’s a melting pot you molded into this city because you didn’t want to stand out. If you wore color, you were a tourist. This city has really embraced global culture. You’re going to see white; it’s going to be a strong accent color. Also, loose boxy tops for girls, boat necks, the pajama pant is going to work, and the hoodie is going to work. Casual lifestyle is going to be the strongest trend overall. People want to feel relaxed.

I do a lot of research and pay attention to what’s going on globally, socially, in nature, with the economy. It affects fashion more than people realize, all these things define the world.”

-What advice do you have for aspiring designers?
Practice your craft, refine it, and define it. You don’t have to design for the world, as long as you reach some people. People believe you have to be this huge conglomerate to be successful, I don’t believe that. I believe you’re successful if you’re good at doing what you do.

-Tell us about Czar and the future you see for your brand.
I wanted to make clothes that could get to more people and have more fun with. Czar was something I was able to mass appeal, so I’m having fun with it. If you can cater to the diversity of women it’s going to attract more people to what you’re doing with your label. I love dressing all types of women, that’s where it all comes from. I’m not making clothes to sit on a wall like art.

In the future, I want several perfumes. I want women wearing Galindo. Once you’re able to make the scent that is your brand that’s really a big part of the business.

I live off of who I am as an artist. That’s a creative mind. Design is endless, creativity is endless. I consider myself very lucky to survive this way.”

CESAR GALINDO

HYPERREALIST ART

HYPERREALIST ART

Hyperrealist art is the most profound vision an artist has when reproducing images onto reality; whether it’s through a sculpture, a traditional or three-dimensional painting. The magic is found in reproducing with such magnificent precision and fidelity the feelings and details to the point that not even the best of cameras could capture it in a picture.
This trend, born in the late 60s, manages to capture a public that in this 2013, in spite of being witness to the marvelous advances of technology, can’t hide its amazement before such perfection of human talent.

ARTE HIPERREALISTA

LU CELANIA SIERRA

LU CELANIA SIERRA, A Brilliant Enchantment

The Miami native defers the essence of her success to the love, unconditional support and guidance received from her parents since she was a child. Her mother, a woman of Black American and American Indian descent planted in her the seed that has sprung and taken her on the most prestigious runways of the world, while her Puerto Rican father instilled in her the importance of being financially savvy and independent. With her parents as the audience, Lu Celania performed her first modeling sessions at home, showing off everything from her dresses to her socks. Lu finished early her studies, and once graduated, she moved to New York at the age of 17 and though doing well, she wasn’t at the level she had aspired. Knowing that New York looked at the models in Paris, she organized her finances, like her father taught her to do, and headed to Paris at the age of 19.

Europe presented Lu with opportunities and challenges which she embraced and turned into positives; she evolved and grew with every experience until becoming the international model she always worked so hard to become; renown for her work with designers Paco Rabanne, Yves Saint Laurent, Ungaro, Pierre Balmain, Givenchy, Armani, Oscar de la Renta, Bill Blass, Escada, Bob Mackie, and many others.

I asked her about the moment when she felt she had reached success, and she told me, “In Europe, I think it really hit me when Monsieur Givenchy had to choose between another model and me. I didn’t out-walk her, I wasn’t prettier than her, my body wasn’t better than hers, but it was my kindness. He said to me, ‘you are the one I want, I want you to be with me.’ He made me his fit model, and I felt I had crossed the line of just being a model; there was now a famous designer who knew me and liked me. Not only because of my walk, but he really liked my personality.” In New York, that defining moment was when she became the Bob Mackie model and started dancing on the runway in diamond g-strings and jumping out of bananas as Josephine Baker.

Although she leaves the planning of her life to God, Lu believes in foster parenting and sharing her nurturing love with girls who one day will become her family. They will have the fortune of learning about modeling from the international icon they’ll refer to as “mom”, and whose unconditional love for them won’t go out of style.

Lu certainly knows how to fill a stage with her presence and demeanor, after all, acting was something she studied and loves doing when possible. Fluent in 5 languages, she’s featured in TV shows both acting and modeling; she’s hosted festivals, beauty pageants, red carpet events and galas. Add to her portfolio runway choreographer for shows like Elude Fashion Show and Ford International Model Search, to name a few. She is a runway expert, coaching and training pageant candidates for Miss USA, Miss Universe, and other competitions of the same caliber.

Lu is a very focused and determined woman who appreciates the blessings in her life and who has no regrets because she feels that God knows how he does his things. Her life hasn’t been without love and though not currently involved, she knows that the man who’ll share her life will be a very secure and God fearing one. Not shy about her age, she says that at 50 she feels, (and looks), great. And she bids farewell to our readers with a unique quote reflective of her confidence, humor and directness, “there are only 2 people in the world; those who want to be me and those who want to marry me, which one are you?”

LU CELANIA SIERRA, Un encanto brillante

Cultural Embassy for Latinos in New York

Located in Harlem, the name of the museum is written in Spanish and it is the pride of the multicultural Latin American community in the US. Its specialty is the art from Latin America and the Caribbean, but emphasizing that of Puerto Rico. It opened its doors in 1969 under the guidance of artist and educator Rafael Montañez Ortiz and a group of visionaries who captured the cultural diversity and educational opportunities in New York City. It was conceived as a community space with an educational purpose and the mission of highlighting, representing and conserving the culture, the history and art or our small towns. It echoed the rise of Latinos in El Barrio, in Uptown Manhattan and in New York in general, expanding its reach and no longer being only home to Puertoricans, but everyone’s home. Today, it embraces groups of artists, students, friends, parents, families, educators, community activists and socio-cultural organizations.

In its permanent exhibition, El Museo Del Barrio has extensive collections of pre-Columbian and indigenous pieces from which art and graphic crafts emerge, popular means of communication, Mexican masks, Chilean textiles and traditional art from Puerto Rico; it holds temporary modern art exhibits from the continent, sponsors numerous festivals and educational programs –including the annual Three Kings Day Parade. It features the Mile of the Museums –event where passersby are impregnated by the joy and rhythm, the aromas, the colors and Latin flavors; it exhibits at the Historical Society of New York, at the Art Museum of Queens, and at the Studio Museum in Harlem.

In 1977 it joined the Cultural Institutions Group (CIGs) increasing its financing, in spite of which, this was frozen in the 80s. However, with the Latin tenacity of those in charge, it bounced back and grew with success in the following decade, experiencing a growth of visitors, especially in 2002 with the exhibit of Frida Kahlo. In 2009, after its renovation and expansion, it reopened. Its installations feature a spacious hall, multiple exhibit rooms, a store, a restaurant, an outdoor patio and a café surrounded by open crystal, from where it shows its beautiful facade to the public on the street.

This historical place was born as a Puertorican House of Culture in New York, but it has transformed into a Latino cultural heritage. Thought, designed, and created to reflect the Latin essence, proud of itself and its mosaic of images, memories and collective landscapes made up of paintings, photographs, prints, sculptures, video art, drawings and poetry among others; representations of the plastic arts, visual and verbal that project the human figure, the architecture, the customs, the idiosyncrasy and the vital phenomenon of Latin American small towns, exploring realities and reflecting the transience of existence.

What’s exhibited in this space tells stories, those that make up an important part of life, that communicate values, experiences, feelings, opinions, popular knowledge, traditions, memories and the conscience of a social conglomerate that looks to preserve its identity and transmit it to new generations of Americans with Latin roots; those stories that look to vehemently show the US and the world, the heart of its culture. In this corner, in the middle of the Big Apple, every Latino feels that he is in his own territory, because El Museo Del Barrio is the intercultural embassy that collects what is most representative between the Rio Grande and the Patagonia, demonstrating that all stories are important, that every country has something to say and that there is a place in the capital of the world to do it, for the simple reason that Latin America is worth being taken into account.

THE BPM FESTIVAL

THE BPM FESTIVAL
The Electronic Music Adventure in Mexico

The BPM Festival is an annual world class electronic music festival which takes place in Mexico’s Playa de Carmen. From its inception, it was originally conceived for electronic music lovers as an excuse to get away from the winter. But little by little it became the most important electronic music festival in the country and it also serves as the starting point for those who live from the industry and are part of the movement.

The attendees of this grand event stay both day and night in multiple places of the picturesque beach town which extends along kilometers of white sandy beaches with tranquil turquoise waters of the Riviera Maya. Playa del Carmen offers a variety of boutique luxury hotels with infinite access to endless dining and dancing spots next to the Ruinas Mayas Cenotes, water sports and ecological tourism.
