ANTHONY RUBIO

Pet Couturier Anthony Rubio

Born and raised in New York City, Anthony Rubio grew up immersed in his Latin culture loving everything from music and cuisine to the elaborate fashions which inspired his colorful palate and helped him evolve as one of the hottest and most sought after designers to date. Growing up in the most rebellious and yet most expressive periods in the history of fashion helped both influence and mold him into the visionary he is today.

With a formal education in women's wear design and twenty years of experience creating and innovating new concepts and techniques, Anthony Rubio had no reservations about delving into the world of pet fashions earning for himself the title of Master Pet Couturier. The pet industry is estimated to be a fifty billion dollar industry worldwide and offered Mr. Rubio the opportunity, who is recognized worldwide, to reach into his world of inspirations to create confections that every dog owner in the know, wants to possess.

His creations are strictly Couture and are considered collectible art inspired by anything from movies to fairy tales and especially by the best women's wear couturiers of Europe. His masterpieces are born from an almost maniacal obsession to achieve perfection stemming from hours of sketching to innovating shapes and forms which are then meticulously executed and finished only when Mr. Rubio is completely satisfied with the final product.

Mr. Rubio is on the boards of several fundraising organizations and most recently was honored and awarded quite unexpectedly by The Humane Society of New Rochelle for his humanitarian efforts in championing animal adoption. Anthony participates where welcomed to facilitate raising funds and awareness to the plight of animals that have no voices to express their needs or pains to make the world a deserving place for their unconditional love. Mr. Rubio is very dedicated along with his personal muses, twin one year old Chihuahuas Bogie the brunette named after Humphrey Bogart, and Kimba the blonde named after a famous anime hero, to help abandoned, lost and abused pets when and however they can. The boys have become iconic heroes recognized worldwide for campaigns that have gone viral and are in the works of being immortalized as comic book super heroes by a world famous cartoonist Graig Weich. Mr. Rubio has already designed their yet to be unveiled costumes.

ROCK OF AGES

    BY PHILIPPE REYNAUD

If a rock can move us beyond our limits; imagine what living matter can do.
The rock is just a rock until man moves it, explores it, and transforms it. Rocks of age you have been man’s greatest tool.
You have the potential to live forever in an every expanding universe. You are a timeless treasure.

A rock can bring joy. A rock can build a city.
A rock can skip across a lake and remind us of a time and place when simplicity was the key.
A rock is nature’s gift to man. Rocks are the stepping stones for mankind and solar system that revolve beyond our imagination.

THE ROCKETTES

New York City is known to the world for the magic of its lights, for the singularity of its people and the diversity of its spectacles. Broadway shows, Madison Square Garden events, and countless theatrical venues filled with originality, emotion, and energy take over The Big Apple on a daily basis.

To shine amongst so much talent is something the Rockettes have mastered for more than 85 years of performance. Under the name of Christmas Spectacular, Radio City Music Hall showcases a musical show every year, where 36 of its 150 dancers take the stage and show off their talent. One can expect to enjoy the jazz rhythms, ballet, and modern dance, fused with the dexterity required of tap dancing, in order to synchronize movements in a play of legs, while at the same time creating an elegant and impeccable choreography enjoyed by more than 2 million people who clap during the event every Christmas season.

But behind this majestic Christmas musical, there is a meticulous routine that demands perfection. The Rockettes are a beautiful group of ladies who have to demonstrate their dancing abilities –jazz, tap and ballet- their motivation, their perseverance, their endurance and extraordinary focus. In addition, they have to meet physical requirements in order to be part of this select group in which thousands of prospects from all over the world audition for a spot. Their measurements, 5‘6” and 5’10 ½”, are strictly taken by its organizers; they have to have long legs, be dancers, be able to work legally in the US, and they need be over 18 years old. Auditions for the 2013 shows will take place in the spring of the same year and you can find information about it at http://www.rockettes.com/

Becoming a Rockette is the golden dream of many dancers. And for young girls who from the age of 10 years old show promise in ballet and tap, The Rockette Experience allows them to fulfill, for a day, that dream. In this extraordinary program, the girls are trained by real Rockettes who help them master the choreographies and the famous “line kick”, which in perfect synchrony raises each of their legs to the height of their heads.

Even though these glamorous girls and their refined choreographies become the center of attention on stage, the whole show is made up of a great number of talented professionals; choreographers, designers, producers and actors. The girls also recreate, in a wonderful choreography, the Parade of the Wooden Soldiers. The show fills us with the Christmas spirit that includes the all around popular “Santa” flying over the audience. Its music, played by a live orchestra, elevates us to a multifaceted dance, representing the true nativity.

The Christmas Spectacular has converted its Rockettes into the icon of Christmas made glamour. And Christmas, in the City of Skyscrapers, would not be the same without this tradition.

Christmas Spectacular
The Rockettes

EXTREME SPORTS MOST FUN

Extreme Sports Most Fun

Winter has arrived and if you, like me, live in one of the coldest states in the US, it is very likely that you’re already preparing yourself both mentally and physically to overcome four months of very low temperatures. There is a great variety of outdoor activities that are full of energy, are a lot of fun, and are healthy and good for our well being. All perfect to enjoy as a family!!

Put the cold to the side and get ready to create unforgettable experiences with the exciting EXTREME sports of the winter season.

Practicing any sport has its risks and it requires action and adventure whether it’s mental or physical. Extreme sports demand of our bodies a high level of control and confidence in our abilities and skills: speed, height and physical strain reach their limit overcoming obstacles and challenging environmental conditions on all types of terrain and climate. Engaging in this type of sport is not synonymous with risking your life; this is why security measures need to be taken and consciousness about the risks about to be taken need to be present. The goal is to overcome the internal challenge and recognize our capacity through persistence, determination and courage.

The beauty of these sports is that you don’t need to be an expert to perform them; all you need is aptitude and a champion attitude to explore it.

Alpine Skiing
Many think that it is dangerous, that those who practice it are too exposed to freezing when in reality, millions of kids and adults enjoy its benefits. Skiing is an exhausting form of exercise that burns between 450 and 900 calories per hour, raises the metabolism and helps regulate cholesterol levels. It also tones the body while strengthening the cardiac muscle and improves the flow of oxygen to the muscles. This aerobic activity improves equilibrium and coordination. When a skier goes down a hill, the gravitational energy in his/her movements propels him/her to reach high velocities which ensues the secretion of endorphins and adrenaline in the blood, elevating the state of mind and creating a sensation of well being, happiness and satisfaction.

Snowboarding
Every year it becomes more popular because of its important mental and cardiovascular health benefits. In this sport you even exercise muscles that aren’t often used like the ones in the feet and ankles. To maintain equilibrium, the muscles at the base of the ankles, the feet, the arms and the shoulders, guide to help direct your movements. It also, significantly improves the body’s flexibility as it requires a simultaneous change of direction and rhythm.

Ice Climbing
Ice climbing is an action sport that allows its followers to express themselves through nature in its purest form; climbing majestic formations over falls and ice covered rocks. This sport pushes for a higher level of skill, concentration and reconsideration of our limits. Among the benefits obtained you have: muscular and cardiovascular resistance, and flexibility.

Physically, climbing burns between 700 and 900 calories per tour and works out almost all muscle groups. The ice is clever and doesn’t understand excuses or justifications and its structures constantly change. To practice this sport, one has to have passion and a high level of concentration.

The benefits of these and other sports are very positive, especially for adolescents. Instead of spending time in idle and sedentary activities, these sports will teach them the importance of discipline, it will increase their self esteem and will uncover their leadership skills; lessons that will forever define their character.

Sports as lifestyle, whether it is for health or entertainment, are an essential part in the formation of human beings. This is something fundamental for the growth and development of the abilities and aptitudes in each person.

AUTUMN / FALL TRENDS 2012-2013

With the change of temperature, two of the most elegant, beautiful, sophisticated and glamorous seasons arrive to the world of fashion; the Autumn/Winter. For the 2012-2013 year, they bring with them beautiful collections which will mark the style for modern women this year-end. From tailored suits, to the elegant nude color on the red carpets, “military style” garments, the use of leather from head to toe, and the modern version of the Baroque; all will be highlighting icons on the runway and the streets of New York. In this article, you will learn a little bit about the year-end trends so you can adapt them and look Fabulous!!

Tailored Suit
It is one of the most classical garments in the female wardrobe.  This season resurfaces and reinvents itself to look more attractive, sexy, desirable and trendy. We have seen thousands of versions on the world catwalks.

Armani, the pioneer, was one of the first ones to believe in the importance of the masculine suit for women. In the ‘80s he retrofitted it and transformed it into the “power suit” of the young yuppies. Ever since, he parades it each season in a thousand different ways, playing with the length, the lapels, the buttons or the pockets. His favorites are the gray tones, and this year he introduces them with low necklines that bring out the sexy side of the suits.

For Miuccia Prada, the suits are the star garments in the collections, which parade in shimmering tones in MiuMiu and in the typical autumn colors. In the meantime, in Prada, they are filled with retro prints and are shortened to make visible the ankles.

Military Style
The military style never left us, but this upcoming season it comes striking very strong. In order to get the “Army Look”, one doesn’t have to dress in camouflage from head to toe. It is enough to wear a jacket with golden buttons, a coat with details such as studs and a camouflaged patterned blouse in green and brown colors, as shown by the Zara brand.

Floral Prints
The already mystical floral print returns once again as the star. This time around the proposal is to wear a large garden where flowers or a bouquet of roses are the protagonists. We will see them in all sizes, some overloaded as Balmain shows us in his collection, others diluted and in blue tones as done by Erdem, or with a super sized oriental touch for pants and blouses as presented by Peter Pilotto in his 2012/2013 autumn/winter collection. If you prefer, you can combine prints with other trends.

The Baroque
The American Heritage Dictionary of the English Language defines baroque as a style featured by vivid dissonance and elaborate ornamentation. It may appear to be a slightly bearable trend, but the reality is that it is present in many collections and many stores that have pointed to baroque fashion. It’s not easy, but it’s not impossible either.

Dolce & Gabbana are the kings of the baroque. Black and gold mixed with rich fabrics such as velvet or brocade to obtain the image of a woman full of strength and a hint of the classical.

Leather
This season, leather is coming out even stronger. We will see it in shirts, dresses, jackets, and pants. ¿How will you wear it? It doesn’t matter if you do it from head to toe or just one piece. Leather is in fashion and designers like Acne, Derek Lam, Givenchy, Proenza Schouler, Saint Laurent Paris and Isabel Marant will feature it in their collections in different ranges of colors, black, white, brown, and oxblood red.

Colors
The Nude comes in two shades: pale rose or beige. Jil Sander y Versace included it in the Prêt-à-Porter -their “Haute Couture” collections- mixing them with other pastel tones and adding gold details; perfect for a red carpet. Electric Blue was present in the Chanel and Lanvin catwalks in elegant and daring designs tight to the body and with a lot of shine. Blue is very flattering, easy to wear and ideal to wear at any time of the day. On the other hand, Oxblood Red captured the eyes of fashion experts and many say, will be the color of the season. No one has escaped its charm and designers like DKNY, Nina Ricci and Alexander Wang suggest it in their collections.

It is worth mentioning that this season is one of the most complete and elegant; with beautiful trends for all tastes. Trends that will help you look fabulous!!!

STEPHANIE ARENAS

IN THE DIAMOND WORLD

The Diamond, symbol of power, exclusivity and style, is the most coveted precious stone among women who distinguish themselves for their refined and good taste. It is a luxury that has become the symbol of eternal compromise when a man chooses to place it on a ring that will shine in the hand of the lady whom he wants to conquer for the rest of his life. It’s a fairy-tale-like dream that can turn into a nightmare for those who don’t know how to identify the value of this precious mineral.

And it is precisely the ability to identify and evaluate the precious stones or gems what turns Gemology into an art, and Stephanie Arenas in the youngest gemology expert in New York City. She earned her title at the Gemological Institute of America (GIA) at the young age of 18, and has set precedence in this guild since it is a profession that is 98% dominated by men.

Stephanie was born in Cali, Colombia and at age 5 came in contact with the jewel world. She grew up attending jewelry workshops thanks to her adoptive father, Mr. German Rojas –a recognized Colombian jewel designer- who instilled in her the love for the profession. In 1998, Stephanie and her family traveled to the US to stay; leaving behind years of hard work, but still in contact with some of the jewelry shops where pieces were manufactured at a national level.

The experience and knowledge in this art served her as a base to build a new life in the country of opportunities. This is why, after finishing high school, Stephanie, with the unconditional support from her mother, Venus Orozco, enrolled in the GIA at the city of skyscrapers to obtain her certification as a gemologist.

Earning this degree required certifying 200 diamonds in a period of three weeks, a requirement she fulfilled in two weeks, so she could certify an additional 150 diamonds in the remaining week. This excellent record guaranteed her various business offers from which this extraordinary Colombian has gained the experience she enjoys certifying stones of high carat.

The certification of diamonds, also known as the Kimberly Certification Process, is a contract that forces all participating governments to trace and document the route of export access for each of the raw diamonds in an attempt to legally commercialize these precious stones and denounce all illegal practices, specially the traffic of diamonds in conflict areas. Another function of the certification is to study the four C’s of a diamond: clarity, color, cut and carat weight, which determine the value of a stone. The symmetry, the fluorescence, the cut, the angle of the crown and the finish of the diamond, are other qualities that the gemologist studies before certifying it.

The diamond is a crystallized carbon and will always be appraised based on its characteristics, never for the brand of the jewel in which it is mounted on. So before investing in a precious gem, make sure to obtain the certification through a gemologist, otherwise, you will run the risk of making a bad purchase and losing a lot of money. Another useful tool used in determining the commercial price of diamonds is the Rapaport Diamond Report which determines the real value of the stone before it is commercialized.

I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to ask this expert how one keeps the clarity and brilliance of this stone after so much use. And she answered: “the diamond is the hardest precious gem of the planet and cannot be damaged with another element that is not a diamond; never put away two diamonds together. The life of this stone is the light, so you have to keep it clean. Washing it with hand soap, water, and a soft brush, will keep it luminous.”

Currently, Stephanie and her father are working on their own jewelry line, made with precious and semi-precious stones. Creations that pretty soon will be in the exclusive market of the Big Apple.
