ALEX HERMOSO

I DREAM OF INTRODUCING A SHOW BEARING MY NAME

Joy, passion and a lot of Venezuelan flavor is what presenter Alex Hermoso transmits to his audience in the midst of lights, camera and of course, a lot of action.

His career as an entertainer is ascending, but this charismatic professional of the microphones doesn't forget his beginnings: "I was working as a bartender in a New York nightclub, which I did to pay for my studies. There, I picked up the microphone and "created my craziness" and people loved it, ever since, my passion for the stage was awakened."

Sometime later and after a lot of experience in front of an audience, he was invited to participate as a radio host in the show Rincones of New York, since then his voice became more recognized and his echo reached an international level and is how he got to present several shows in the Dominican Republic for the TV network Tele Micro. In 2011 many doors opened for this successful South American during New York Fashion Week, as he was the official presenter for the launch of the LATINO SHOW MAGAZINE and in 2012 he was seen presenting important award shows; Miss Latin Beauty, Urban Awards, and Elite Awards.

His dream is to conduct a TV show bearing his name where he can help, entertain and have fun with his community. Alex Hermoso is a happy father of three beautiful little ones. The trajectory he chose in his life has not been an easy task; "I emphasize a lot my difficult beginnings because I want those who are starting out with their dreams at a professional level to know that even though there are challenges, they can always be overcome as long as there is perseverance"

Alex has many projects for 2013 but does not want to reveal them because he wants it to be a surprise for his fans.

The line between commercial and underground music is hardly defined, and fans are becoming more clamorous than ever. The recent explosion of electronic music in the worldwide scene has created a demand for bigger and better produced events. A demand that seasoned nightlife entrepreneurs Antonio Piacquadio, Rob Toma, and Paolo Gasparini have met since 2010 forming Ibiza United. After their opening of Sankeys Ibiza they have become known as “The Americans” who brought underground back to the white isle. With almost three decades in the industry, coordinating major electronic events across the globe, they have landed the pearl of Ibiza, SPACE, in New York City. LATINO SHOW MAGAZINE spoke with Ibiza United and the agenda included new challenges of the industry, the future, and of course, the Latino talent.

We asked Paolo, when and under what premises was Ibiza United formed, to which he answered: “Ibiza United was created with the purpose of taking underground music to a larger audience. To help new talent grow, provide quality events with a serious focus on sound design, and the most serious artist hospitality that I know no one else can offer.”  Like the OHM Festival in Croatia, Miami Music Week with DJ Mag, and the Black & White Festival in Colombia. The latter is the result of a successful association between entrepreneur David Sarria and producer Álvaro Altamirano, CEO of Alvaro Altamirano Entertainment.

The group of entrepreneurs is very excited about their first participation in a South American festival, one where the expectation is to have a sold out Black And White. “Our marketing and public relations experience in combination with the quality of local Colombian promoters are sure to make this event one for the record books,” shared Antonio with us, who also explained to us the role that the Latin market plays in the electronic music industry at a global level. A lot of the music is Groove based, which comes largely from a Latino music cultural influence, not to mention some of the biggest and upcoming DJ’s in the world are of Latin descent. This is the case of Luciano, a Chile native who has been present in the hits lists of the last years.

Ibiza United knows that Luciano is a prodigy who as a DJ makes the crowds move, a reason why they plan to continue working with him on a regular basis both in the U.S. and abroad. Marco Carola, the most talented and avant-garde Tech House DJ in the world, Reboot a super creative artist of German descent, and Butch, another German prodigy, all are part of the work agenda.

As for the plans for Ibiza United, they are already in motion, producing events worldwide and teaming up with the top local promoters in different regions with the goal of producing festivals that delight all electronic music enthusiasts.

“There is nothing corporate about this business. At the end of the day what people want is to enjoy a good party with good vibes and the best music. The closing and financial results are not our priority. ‘Creation and production first,’ that’s the Ibiza United motto. We understand that this is a business, but creativity is what makes us special,” concludes Paolo.

JAZZ LATINO

"Latín Jazz is the most exciting of all music" says Fernando Trueba, a prestigious Spanish film director.

But, What Is Latin Jazz? Who are its greatest exponents? What has been its impact on Latin and Anglo idiosyncrasies? Latin Jazz or Afro-Cuban Jazz, as it was known when it first started, is a branch of jazz that fuses Latin music rhythms, mainly from Cuba.

In the 40s, Latin tunes began filtering into the American Jazz sphere, a fact that is reinforced by the adaptations of themes like El Manisero, a recognized Cuban beat , which was recorded by the immortal Louis Armstrong and El Choclo, one of the most popular tangos played by Stan Kenton in a jazz version. Simultaneously, in New York, which has been, is, and will be the Mecca of this genre, Mario Bauzá and Frank Grillo "Machito"- pioneers and creators of Latin Jazz, popularized it as an already established musical genre. The consolidation is achieved when Charlie Parker and Dizzy Gillespie unite to ennoble it, and this is when majestic percussionists like "Chano" Pozo and "Patato" Valdés emerge. Great bass players like "Cachao” Lopez, trumpeters like "Chocolate" Armenteros and pianists like "Bebo" Valdés and "Peruchin" Justiz.

Chico O'Farrill, known as "The Architect of Latin Jazz," structured it, and Tito Puente, Mongo Santamaria and Cal Tjader further modernized it by adding vibraphones and a greater resonance of percussion.

In the early 60's and due to the ruptured diplomatic relations between the U.S. and Cuba, there was a shortage in the flow of Cuban musicians which shifted the focus to Puerto Rico. This gave rise to Salsa gender, a name assigned by the director of the Fania label, Dominican Johnny Pacheco, to the compression of a variety of rhythms (plenas, guarachas, mambos, guaguancó, montunos and guajiras) unleashing the most important musical phenomenon of the century for the Latin community, all based on the “Cuban beat” and the Afro-Cuban Jazz. The weight of Latin Jazz then fell on the new musical leaders born in the U.S., but of Latin descent, mainly, Ray Barretto, Tito Puente, the Charlie Brothers and Eddie Palmieri. A special mention is due to Eddie, who is the architect of the establishment of Latin Jazz as a category in the laureate American Grammy Awards.

Such has been the popularity of Latin Jazz that great artists like Sophia Loren and Marlon Brando have acquired the services of masters like Colombian pianist Eddie Martinez and Argentine "Gato" Barbieri to create the soundtrack to several of their films. Lalo Schifrin, a talented Argentine pianist composed the melodies of the TV series Mission Impossible, Starsky and Hutch and Dirty Harry by Clint Eastwood. The famous HBO series Sex and the City permeated every chapter of its story with the elegance and sensuality of Latin Jazz played in the style of Cuomo's Band, led by prestigious pianist Oscar Hernandez.

The pioneers and maximum exponents are gone, but their legacy remains active generation after generation, and new bands like La Contundente and Adjazzentes of Colombia pave their way.

Stunning festivals like Heineken and The Playboy Jazz Festival and a lot of contemporary and avant-garde Latin Jazz musicians with enormous talent, native to our regions, like Giovanni Hidalgo, Chucho Valdés, Poncho Sánchez, Johnny Rivero, Ralph Irizarry, Roberto Quintero, Hilario Durán, Paoli Mejías, Tony Pérez, “Pulpo” Colón Jr., “El negro” Hernández and Roberto Fonseca among others, are an affirmation that the style and elegance of Latin Jazz, will last forever.

JAZZ LATINO
ELEGANCIA HECHA RITMO

Have you noticed how so many good, beautiful, intelligent, successful and even famous women, constantly complain about their bad luck with love? If you can identify with this group of single women, reflect on how you see yourself. I always repeat these words: “Tell me the level of your self-esteem and I’ll tell you who seeks you.” This is why I ask you, from a scale of 1 to 10, how do you grade your self-esteem? Zero means “I am a disaster and I’m worth nothing,” while a ten means “I am the best and I deserve the best.” Anything below a 10 puts you at risk of falling for a “good for nothing,” which translates to bad luck in love. Did you know that the origin of all your disillusions, frustrations, and failed love affairs is rooted on how much you love yourself? The lower your self-esteem, the more prone to dismissal, disrespect, humiliation or aloofness you become. But when your degree of self-esteem is high, your love experiences are more pleasant and successful.

When you value yourself as a woman, and give yourself worth, you make men “go crazy for you.” Ironically, self-sacrificing women who go above and beyond to serve them and pamper them are precisely those who are left desolate, forgotten or heartbroken. While those who don’t care much for being complacent and put themselves first, are the ones who get treated like queens. If you want to be part of the women who have men at their feet, you have to stop behaving like a “chronic pleaser.”

A desirable single woman doesn’t rush to please. She gives a little and does so slowly. Besides, she waits for the right time to make sure that her suitor is genuinely interested in her, which will give her the green light to start pampering him. To be the most desirable you cannot be available all the time, because what a man enjoys most is the hunt for a prey that is not so easy to catch.

A woman that knows she’s worthy also knows that she doesn’t have to impress or go above and beyond in order for someone to love her. On the other hand, a “chronic pleaser” cancels her plans to adapt to her partner’s agenda. If you are the type that lives to please, I encourage you to resist that desire of wanting to be so good in order to get a man. In a relationship, don’t give too much, too fast. When a lover feels that he has you at his feet, the desire to win you over or conquer you withers away. Let him strive to please you. After all, and by nature, men enjoy doing things for women. I’m not saying that the secret to conquer a man is to be cold and conceited, instead, the secret lies in the value you give yourself. Appreciating how wonderful you are lets you love yourself in a way that enables you to only accept a man in your life who’s really worthy of you and would do anything to make you happy.

Learn the seven mistakes women make in love through Maria Marin’s new book Si soy tan buena, ¿Por qué estoy soltera?

~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~

CARLOS VIVES

Volví a Nacer is the tune that has all of Latin America dancing Carlos Vives style, the Colombian singer songwriter who has been and will continue to be liked after having merited the heart of his homeland. This affirmation was supported at the Nuestra Tierra Awards, an important Colombian recognition event that awarded this successful artist with 6 prizes in one evening. And for those who know about music, this bouquet of awards was not a surprise, as this tune is one of the songs that have long remained in the prestigious Billboards list.

But the feast continues, as the firm Sony Music joyfully announced that Caribbean, Carlos Alberto Vives Restrepo joins their cast after signing a contract where his new production Corazón Profundo, which includes the above named song, already emerges as one of the favorite and most successful albums of the year. His official video has surpassed 18 million visits in YouTube after only three months of being launched.

And even though he’s far from where he started, Vives maintains that essence which allowed him to become the “Vallenato ambassador” to the whole world, after total success was obtained through his songs La Gota Fria, El Amor de mi Tierra, and La Tierra del Olvido.

Both his songs and his dynamic and joyful smile have turned Vives into the deserving representation of a joyous Caribbean culture, humble and jovial in the exterior. Carlos has learned to represent with great pride a Colombia that supports him and follows him both nationally and internationally; and behind the many awards, being the only Colombian to win a Grammy Award in the year 2000 followed by a Latin Grammy Award, is the best retribution that the singer can offer to his loyal followers.

In regards to his personal life, Carlos Vives has been very prudent as it relates to his third and latest marriage to former Antioquia beauty queen, Claudia Elena Vásquez, with whom he had his two youngest children, Elena and Pedro. His first two, Carlos Enrique and Lucia, were born while married to Puerto Rican Herlinda Gómez, with whom it is said that he has had to work hard in order to stay close to his oldest children. It seems that tensions with Herlinda after the divorce were a difficult challenge to overcome. But the enthusiastic spirit of Carlos keeps him strong and always full of energy in order to put his people to dance and to continue happily united with his 4 kids; but above all, to keep that smile, characteristic of his always happy expression.

Carlos Vives, pride of Colombia. He remains and reinvents himself, the man that in each one of his challenges and musical plans Vuelve a Nacer (Is Born Again)

~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~

VOLVÍ A NACER

2013 BILLBOARD LATIN MUSIC CONFERENCE

In the entertainment world, Billboard is considered the world’s foremost authority in music publication; and even though its start in 1894 geared towards advertising business, Billboard and its highly acclaimed music charts have ripened into the ultimate source of information on “trends and innovation in music, serving music fans, artists, top executives, tour promoters, publishers, radio programmers, lawyers, retailers, digital entrepreneurs and many others.”

The 2013 Billboard Latin Music Conference presented by State Farm® in association with Pepsi, taking place from April 23 to 25 at the JW Marriott Marquis in Miami, Florida will be joined by keynote speakers, Gloria Estefan, accompanied by Colombian superstar, Carlos Vives, and Telemundo Media President, Emilio Romano, as they partake in three days of provocative presentations and panel discussions and exclusive Q&As.

Gloria Estefan will sit with Leila Cobo, Billboard’s Executive Director of Latin Content and Programming, for an in-depth conversation about her new album, her Broadway show, her multiple businesses, and remaining Number 1 on the charts. The Cuban-born, Miami-raised performer has sold more than 100 million albums worldwide and earned 17 Billboard Latin Music Awards and seven Grammy Awards since debuting as the front woman for what would become the Miami Sound Machine, a band she joined as a teenager upon meeting her now-husband and 19-time Grammy Award winning producer Emilio Estefan.

Multi-platinum artist, social media maven and entrepreneur Don Omar, will be featured on the Viva for VEVO panel. He will join Doug McVehil, SVP, Music Programming, Talent & Content Operations for VEVO and Billboard’s Editorial Director, Bill Werde, for a compelling discussion on how artists can maximize their presence and revenue in the world’s leading all-premium music video and entertainment platform.

Don Omar’s high sales and airplay mirror his overwhelming popularity on social networks. His blockbuster hit Danza Kuduro, featuring Lucenzo, has broken the record for the most-watched Latin video in history, featured on VEVO, with over 431 million views. He tops the list of finalists competing for 18 awards in 16 categories, including: Artist of the YearSocial Artist of the Year; and Streaming Artist of the Year. His album Don Omar Presents MT02: New Generation competes for two awards, while three of his hit songs are finalists in various song categories. Dutty Love featuring Natty Natasha is up for four awards, including Latin Rhythm Song of the Year where it competes with Hasta Que Salga el Sol, and Digital Song of the Year, vying against his own collaboration with LucenzoDanza Kuduro. The latter is also up for Streaming Song of the Year.

The celebration continues with Latin music female singers/songwriters Kany GarciaCarla Morrison, America Sierra and Olga Tañon, who have been confirmed to participate on the Latin’s Leading Ladies panel, featuring a gathering of bold female artists who are changing the sound and look of women in music.

Kany Garcia is leaving her mark on Spanish-language pop by finding interesting ways to communicate her thoughts. In just six years of professional career and three studio albums, her creative power has been recognized with two Billboard Latin Music Awards and two Latin Grammys. A talented performer, she also works behind the scenes; most recently, she produced and wrote the entire album of Puerto Rican singer Christian Daniel and collaborated with artists such as Gilberto Santa Rosa and Franco de Vita. Her latest album, Kany Garcia, was released in July 2012 and debuted atop Billboard’s Latin Pop Albums chart.

Mexican songstress Carla Morrison has become one of the rising stars in Latin music today. Since the release of her self-produced debut EP in 2010, Carla has made major in-roads and is currently enjoying a huge wave of success in her native Mexico. She has also collaborated with different artists including a duet with Mexican icon Juan Gabriel. Her debut album, Déjenme Llorar released on March 2012, won her two Latin Grammys and a Grammy nomination.
