STEVE AOKI EXCLUSIVE

Steve Aoki, one of the “sensation” DJs in the US, granted us a special interview and we accompanied him in one of his presentations at the Electric Zoo Festival which took place at Randall’s Island, an oasis in the middle of New York City. It was there that we bared witness to the musical phenomenon, the electronic scene and an excellent show, compliments of this great DJ.

Aoki was born in Miami and raised in California, which has allowed him to live very close to Latin customs and lifestyle, and to understand some Spanish words. Steve enjoys this culture, especially Mexican tacos and the beauty of its women. “The Latin public has it all; its human quality, customs and how they feel the music. They’re some of the best audiences in the world; it’s in their blood,” he told us with great enthusiasm! His tour manager and friend, is from Puerto Rico, so his connection with the Latin public is a strong one. From his most recent tour through Latin America, he tells us: “it was sublime, all the shows were full. We visited Venezuela, Ecuador, Argentina, Chile, México and of course your city, Bogotá, in Colombia. He smiles and gives me a hug -I’m Colombian-

Steve Aoki is of Japanese descent on his father’s side; recognized owner of the Benihana restaurant chain. His sister, Devon Aoki, a supermodel and actress, makes part of the artistic world in which he was raised. A double major graduate in Women’s Studies and Sociology, he lived with his grandfather, with his mother and his two older brothers. His college dream was to be a professor: “I always liked teaching, but in college I created my first productions and did concerts with several friends and classmates; it was then that my music career began. At age 20 I formed my own musical studio Dim Mak Records, in esteem of one of my childhood heroes, Bruce Lee.”

His Asian face and his long flamboyant hair style don’t let Aoki go unnoticed. And his shows aren’t at all dull; cake and champagne throwing at the public, a giant inflatable boat with him in it to navigate through the crazed and ecstatic human wave are all part of the show, something he considers different and a more personal connection with his public and fans. Songs like Turbulence, Cudi The Kid, and Beatdown, are part of the successful evening.

Aoki is a great admirer of DJ Daft Punk and has a great obsession with technology. “I love to take part in the creation of robots, so I like everything related to robotics, but for now I’m very focused in the music.” Which means that we will have Aoki for a long while!

Steve Aoki uno de los DJs “sensación” de los EE.UU, nos concedió una particular entrevista y pudimos acompañarlo en una de sus presentaciones en el Festival Electric Zoo que se llevó a cabo en Randall’s Island, un oasis en la mitad de la ciudad de Nueva York. Allí fuimos testigos del fenómeno musical, de la escena electrónica y de un excelente show por parte de este gran Dj.

Aoki nació en Miami y creció en California, lo que le ha permitido vivir muy de cerca las costumbres y el estilo de vida de los latinos, y entender algunas palabras en español. Steve disfruta de esta cultura, en especial de los tacos mexicanos y de la belleza de sus mujeres. “El público latino lo tiene todo; su calidad humana, sus costumbres y cómo sienten la música. Son uno de los mejores públicos del mundo; lo traen en la sangre.” Nos dijo con gran entusiasmo! Su manager de gira y amigo, es de Puerto Rico, así que la conexión con el público latino es muy fuerte. De su reciente gira por Latinoamérica nos dijo: “Fue sublime, llenos todos los shows. Visitamos a Venezuela, Ecuador, Argentina, Chile, México y por supuesto tu ciudad Bogotá, en Colombia -Sonríe y me abraza, soy colombiana-

Steve Aoki tiene descendencia Japonesa por parte de su padre; reconocido dueño de la cadena de restaurantes Benihana. Su hermana Devon Aoki, la supermodelo y actriz, hace parte del mundo artístico en el que creció. Graduado con dos títulos, uno en Estudios de la Mujer y el otro en Sociología, vivió con su abuelo, con su madre y con sus dos hermanos mayores. Su sueño de universitario fue el de ser profesor: “siempre me gustó enseñar, pero en la universidad produje mis primeras producciones e hice conciertos con varios amigos y compañeros, ahí empezó mi carrera con la música. A los 20 años creé mi propio estudio musical Dim Mak Records, en admiración a uno de mis grandes héroes de la infancia, Bruce Lee.”

Su cara asiática y su pelo largo con un estilo bastante llamativo no dejan que Aoki pase desapercibido. Y es que sus shows no son para nada comunes, tirarle tortas y champagne al público, un bote inflable gigante con él mismo adentro para navegar la desquiciada y extasiada marea humana es parte del show; algo que él considera diferente; una conexión más personal con su público y con sus fans. Temas como Turbulence, Cudi The Kid, y Beatdown, son parte de la exitosa noche.

Aoki es un gran admirador del DJ Daft Punk y tiene una gran obsesión con la tecnología. “Me encantaría participar en la creación de robots, así que me interesa mucho todo lo relacionado con la robótica, pero por ahora estoy muy enfocado en la música.” Lo que quiere decir que tenemos Aoki para mucho rato!
