CALI'S FAIR... A TRIBUTE TO JOY
In 1956, the city of Cali, Colombia, lived an
unprecedented tragedy. A city of happy people stopped smiling. But a year
later, the natives of the "Heavens' Subsidiary", as this beautiful
city has been affectionately known, came up with the idea of organizing a great
event that would help to heal the wounds and restore the joy and festivity that
have always characterized the city of Cali. Thus is born the Sugar Cane Fair, known worldwide as Cali's Fair (La Feria De Cali).
Since then, every year, for 6 consecutive days from
the 25th to the 30th of December Cali celebrates one of the most famous
festivals in the world. The great cultural content and the diversity of
activities with which Cali natives infect themselves and foreigners with their
spontaneity and joy have succeeded in making Cali's Fair the icon of this city along with its love for the
"salsa" beat.
Salsa is a musical genre that was born from the fusion
of West Indian rhythms such as Boogaloo, Son and Pachanga -originating in Cuba
and Puerto Rico, and the Cali enriched Afro-Colombian musical ancestor, a
magical mixture of loud sounds and joyous percussion movements, hot and exotic.
This passion for music and dance, has been adopted as part of the identity of
Cali and earned this city the title of "The World Capital of Salsa".
The Festival of
Orchestras is one of the biggest attractions of the fair. There, the best
salsa orchestras and singers-national and international-have vibrated, they
sing and dance to thousands of viewers through concerts, fairs and festivals. Los Billos Caracas Boys, Fania All Star, Nelson y Sus Estrellas, La
Gran Banda Caleña, Richie Ray &
Bobby Cruz, El Gran Combo De Puerto
Rico, Grupo Niche, Los Hermanos Lebron, Willie Rosario, Guayacán, La Misma Gente,
Sonora Matancera, Celia Cruz, Lucho Bermudez and Piper Pimienta, are only part of an endless list
of musical groups that have taken over the platforms on a night out. And in the
show, there is 'rumba' for everyone!
For grandparents and for those who prefer the classic
salsa or remember their days of youth you have "the viejotecas". For
youth and adults there are the concerts, salsódromo, salsotecas and
"Juanchito", a popular neighborhood on the outskirts of the city
where the major salsa clubs are located. And the children, they also have a
special program in the "chiqui-fair".
Cali's Fair is also famous for its horseback riding where
beautiful Paso Fino horses parade through the main streets as on the
bullfighting season, and also for the delicious national and international
cuisine that pleases the palate.
"Las tascas" are small outdoor restaurants
that offer the best dishes of the show and are always updated with the most
appetizing menu, chicken stew, tamales,
empanadas, pandebono, puerquitas
prepared with green banana and pork, aborrajados,
it also includes cheese and ripe banana sandwich and refreshing traditional
drinks: the famous "champus"
drink made with corn, pineapple and lulo, delicious "lulada" and the unique cholados
-snow cones with fruit and candy flavors.
This year, the city is preparing to welcome the
beautiful representatives of 18 countries, candidates to the crown of the Panamerican Sugar Cane, with the purpose
of uniting the continent through tourism, beauty and values of women reason for
which they'll send their queen, the beautiful Carmen Lucia Aldana, to represent Colombia in Miss Universe, on the
19th of December, in the city of Las Vegas.
At Cali's Fair
one feels and shares the joy. The Caleños, with their spontaneous smiles are
inviting to be part of the party. It's a whirlwind of sensations, sounds,
scents, flavors and colors that awaken the senses. One "rumbea" and
"pachanguea" to the rhythm of salsa, tastes the spice in the chili
and its men, the afternoon heat mixed with the Aguardiente and rum, cane scented with the flavor of sweet desserts
and fresh fruit juices. And on the streets, listening to the music and the
unmistakable accent of Caleños, which when calling someone they say, "Mira
Ve” (Look, you!).
Cali has shown that it is still the "Capital of
Joy", it is the largest city in Colombia to which more songs are devoted.
As stated in the Billos Caracas Boys'
song "My beautiful Cali: the arriving here is rigged! And they have
demonstrated it by the many foreigners who decide to stay, trapped by the
warmth of its people, for its warm climate and its cool breeze. In Cali you
always wanna have fun, that's why, "Cali is Cali, and the rest ...."

Feria de Cali
Un tributo a la alegría!
En
1956, la ciudad de Cali, Colombia, vive una tragedia sin precedentes. Una
ciudad de gente alegre, dejó de sonreír. Pero un
año más tarde, los nativos de “La sucursal del cielo”, como cariñosamente se le
conoce a esta bella ciudad, tuvieron la idea de hacer un gran evento que
ayudara a cerrar las heridas y a restituir la alegría y la festividad que
siempre han caracterizado a los caleños. Así, nace la Feria De La Caña De Azúcar, conocida mundialmente como la Feria De Cali.
Desde
entonces, cada año, durante 6 días consecutivos -desde el 25 hasta el 30 de
diciembre- se celebra una de las fiestas más famosas del planeta. Su gran
contenido cultural y la diversidad de sus actividades; en la que los caleños
contagian a propios y a extranjeros con su espontaneidad y alegría, han logrado
hacer de la Feria De Cali, el icono
de los caleños y su amor por el ritmo “salsa”.
La
salsa es un género
musical que nació de la fusión de ritmos antillanos tales como el boogaloo, el
son y la pachanga -originarios de Cuba y Puerto Rico- y a la que los caleños
enriquecieron con su ancestro musical afrocolombiano; una mezcla mágica de sonidos
fuertes de percusión con movimientos alegres, candentes y exóticos. Esta pasión
por la música y el baile, ha sido adoptada como parte de la identidad de los
caleños y le adjudicó a Cali, el titulo de “capital mundial de la salsa".
El
Festival De Orquestas, es uno de los
mayores atractivos de la feria. Allí, las mejores orquestas y cantantes de
salsa -nacionales e internacionales- han hecho vibrar, cantar y bailar a miles
de espectadores, por medio de conciertos, verbenas y fiestas populares. Billos Caracas Boys,
Fania All Star, Nelson Y Sus Estrellas, La
Gran Banda Caleña, Richie Rey &
Bobby Cruz, El Gran Combo De Puerto Rico,
Grupo Niche, Los Hermanos Lebrón, Willie Rosario,
Guayacán,
La Misma Gente, Sonora Matancera, Celia Cruz,
Lucho Bermúdez y Piper Pimienta, son tan solo una parte de la innumerable lista de
las agrupaciones musicales que se han apoderado de las tarimas, en una noche de
fiesta. Y es que en la feria, hay rumba para todos!
Para
los abuelos y para quienes prefieren la salsa clásica o recordar sus épocas de juventud, están
“las viejotecas”. Para los jóvenes y adultos, los conciertos, el salsódromo, las salsotecas y “Juanchito”; un barrio popular
a las afueras de la ciudad, donde se encuentran las más importantes discotecas
de salsa. Y los niños, también tienen un programa especial en la “chiqui feria”.
La Feria De Cali también es famosa por sus
cabalgatas: hermosos caballos de paso fino que desfilan
por las principales calles, por su
temporada taurina y por la deliciosa gastronomía nacional e
internacional que complace los paladares más exigentes.
“Las
tascas”: pequeños restaurantes al aire libre que ofrecen los mejores platos típicos de la feria, están siempre al
día con el menú más apetecido; sancocho de gallina, tamales, empanadas,
pandebono, puerquitas preparadas con
plátano y chicharrón, aborrajados;
que además de plátano maduro incluyen queso y bocadillo y las refrescantes
bebidas tradicionales: el famoso “champús”,
bebida preparada con maíz, piña y lulo, la deliciosa “lulada” y los inigualables cholados;
raspados de hielo con frutas y dulces de sabores.
Este año, la ciudad se prepara para recibir las
bellas representantes de 18 países, aspirantes a la corona del
Reinado Panamericano De La Caña de Azúcar,
con el propósito de unir al continente mediante el turismo, la belleza y los
valores de las mujeres y para enviar a su reina, la bella Carmen
Lucia Aldana, a representar a Colombia en Miss Universo, el próximo 19 de
diciembre, en la ciudad de las Vegas.
En
la Feria De Cali se siente y se comparte la alegría. Los caleños, con
sus espontaneas sonrisas, invitan a ser parte de la fiesta. Es un torbellino de
sensaciones, sonidos, fragancias, sabores y colores que despiertan los
sentidos. Se rumbea y se “pachanguea” al ritmo de salsa, se siente el sabor del
ají y el picante de sus hombres, el calor de la tarde se mezcla con el del
aguardiente y el ron, el aroma a caña con el sabor de sus dulces postres y
refrescantes jugos de frutas. Y en las calles, se escucha la música y el acento
inconfundible de los caleños, que para llamarte, te dicen: “Mirá, ve”.
Cali ha demostrado que sigue siendo “La Capital de la
alegría”, es la ciudad de Colombia a la que más canciones le han dedicado. Como
dice la Billos Caracas Boys “Mi Cali
bella: el que llega aquí, se amaña! Y así lo han demostrado los muchos
extranjeros que deciden quedarse, atrapados por la calidez de su gente, por su
clima cálido y por su brisa fresca. En Cali siempre dan ganas de pasarla bien,
por eso, “Cali es Cali, y lo demás….”
