LU CELANIA SIERRA, A Brilliant Enchantment
The Miami native defers the essence of her success to the love, unconditional support and guidance received from her parents since she was a child. Her mother, a woman of Black American and American Indian descent planted in her the seed that has sprung and taken her on the most prestigious runways of the world, while her Puerto Rican father instilled in her the importance of being financially savvy and independent. With her parents as the audience, Lu Celania performed her first modeling sessions at home, showing off everything from her dresses to her socks. Lu finished early her studies, and once graduated, she moved to New York at the age of 17 and though doing well, she wasn’t at the level she had aspired. Knowing that New York looked at the models in Paris, she organized her finances, like her father taught her to do, and headed to Paris at the age of 19.
Europe presented Lu with opportunities and challenges which she embraced and turned into positives; she evolved and grew with every experience until becoming the international model she always worked so hard to become; renown for her work with designers Paco Rabanne, Yves Saint Laurent, Ungaro, Pierre Balmain, Givenchy, Armani, Oscar de la Renta, Bill Blass, Escada, Bob Mackie, and many others.
I asked her about the moment when she felt she had reached success, and she told me, “In Europe, I think it really hit me when Monsieur Givenchy had to choose between another model and me. I didn’t out-walk her, I wasn’t prettier than her, my body wasn’t better than hers, but it was my kindness. He said to me, ‘you are the one I want, I want you to be with me.’ He made me his fit model, and I felt I had crossed the line of just being a model; there was now a famous designer who knew me and liked me. Not only because of my walk, but he really liked my personality.” In New York, that defining moment was when she became the Bob Mackie model and started dancing on the runway in diamond g-strings and jumping out of bananas as Josephine Baker.
Although she leaves the planning of her life to God, Lu believes in foster parenting and sharing her nurturing love with girls who one day will become her family. They will have the fortune of learning about modeling from the international icon they’ll refer to as “mom”, and whose unconditional love for them won’t go out of style.
Lu certainly knows how to fill a stage with her presence and demeanor, after all, acting was something she studied and loves doing when possible. Fluent in 5 languages, she’s featured in TV shows both acting and modeling; she’s hosted festivals, beauty pageants, red carpet events and galas. Add to her portfolio runway choreographer for shows like Elude Fashion Show and Ford International Model Search, to name a few. She is a runway expert, coaching and training pageant candidates for Miss USA, Miss Universe, and other competitions of the same caliber.
Lu is a very focused and determined woman who appreciates the blessings in her life and who has no regrets because she feels that God knows how he does his things. Her life hasn’t been without love and though not currently involved, she knows that the man who’ll share her life will be a very secure and God fearing one. Not shy about her age, she says that at 50 she feels, (and looks), great. Hallar a una persona con características admirables no es extraño; pero
encontrar a quien una y otra vez se esmera por hallar, crear y transformar
oportunidades en éxitos de mérito internacional, es único.
La nativa de Miami le confiere la esencia de su éxito al amor, al apoyo
incondicional y a la guía que desde niña recibió de sus padres. Su madre, una
mujer de ascendencia afroamericana y nativa americana, sembró en ella la
semilla que ha crecido y la ha llevado a las pasarelas mas prestigiosas del
mundo, mientras que su padre, un hombre puertorriqueño, le inculcó la
importancia de ser financieramente independiente y hábil. Con sus padres como
audiencia, Lu Celania hizo sus
primeras presentaciones en casa, modelando desde sus vestidos hasta sus medias.
Lu terminó sus estudios, y después de
graduarse se mudó a Nueva York. A la
edad de 17 años y comenzó a tener éxito, pero no al nivel que ella aspiraba. Sabiendo que Nueva York miraba a las modelos de Paris, Lu organizó sus
finanzas, tal y como su padre le había enseñado, y se mudó a Paris a los 19 años.
Europa le presentó oportunidades y retos, los cuales ella adoptó y
transformó en cosas positivas; evolvió y creció con cada experiencia hasta convertirse
en la modelo internacional que con tanto esfuerzo había forjado; reconocida por
trabajos con diseñadores como Paco
Rabanne, Yves Saint Laurent, Ungaro, Pierre Balmain, Givenchy, Armani, Oscar de
la Renta, Bill Blass, Escada, Bob Mackie, y muchos otros.
Al preguntarle sobre el momento en que se sintió más exitosa, ella
respondió, “fue en Europa, cuando el señor Givenchy
tenía que escoger entre otra modelo y yo. Yo no caminaba mejor que ella, ni era
más bonita, ni tenía el mejor cuerpo; fue mi amabilidad lo que lo atrajo. Él me dijo “tú eres a quien quiero, quiero que trabajes conmigo.” Y ahí,
me convertí en su modelo de ajuste;
sentí que había cruzado la línea de ser más que una modelo; ahora había un diseñador
famoso que me conocía y a quien yo le gustaba, no solo por mi manera de caminar,
pero además porque realmente le cautivaba mi personalidad.” En Nueva York, ese momento fue al
convertirse en la modelo de Bob Mackie
al bailar en las pasarelas vistiendo tangas de diamantes y saltando de disfraces
de bananas como Josephine Baker.
Aunque la planificación de su futuro se la deja a Dios, ella cree en la
adopción y en poder compartir su amor con aquellas niñas que un día serán parte
de su familia. Ellas tendrán la fortuna de aprender modelaje de un icono
internacional a quien ellas llamaran “mamá”, y cuyo amor incondicional nunca estará
fuera de moda.
Lu indudablemente sabe llenar el escenario con su presencia y porte, después
de todo, actuación es algo que ella ha estudiado y que le encanta hacer cuando
puede. Domina 5 idiomas, ha actuado y modelado en programas de TV, ha sido
anfitriona de festivales, reinados de belleza, eventos de carpeta roja y galas.
Además, ha sido coreógrafa de pasarelas para shows como Elude Fashion Show y Ford
International Model Search, para nombrar algunos. Es experta en la pasarela
entrenando candidatas de belleza para los eventos de Miss USA, Miss Universo, y otras competencias del mismo calibre.
Esta mujer enfocada y determinada aprecia las bendiciones en su vida y no
se arrepiente de nada en ella, porque siente que Dios sabe cómo hace sus cosas.
En su vida no ha hecho falta el amor y aunque en el momento no está en una
relación amorosa, ella sabe que el hombre con quien compartirá su vida es un
hombre de Dios y seguro de sí mismo. Nada tímida sobre su edad, ella dice que a
sus 50 años se siente (y se ve) fabulosa. Ella se despide de nuestros lectores
con una frase única, reflejo de su autoestima, humor, y candidez, “solo hay dos clases de personas en el mundo,
aquellas que quieren ser yo y aquellas que se quieren casar conmigo, ¿de cuál
clase eres tú?”
