With the hope of a sunny day, the cold winter morning in New York turned warm and cozy, both because of the splendor of the beautiful fireplace that amid crystals adorned the room, and the presence of a humble woman whose human warmth and spirituality made the LATINO SHOW MAGAZINE team feel at home.

Elsa Gladys Cifuentes Aranzazu. A humanist by excellence, attorney by profession, specialized in Human Rights and Social Management, with studies in Administrative Law, Labor Contracting, and Public Management, author of law projects on Animal Welfare and Proper Use of Natural Resources and Ecosystems; these are only some of the merits that outline the professional profile of the one who on August 2011 becomes the first woman to take on the role of General Consul of Colombia in New York. She was born in Pereira, the capital of Risaralda, one of the most important cities in the coffee growing region of Colombia. It is precisely there that her political career is born and developed, taking on several roles in the public sector like Councilwoman of Pereira, Congresswoman, Governor or Risaralda, Colombian Senator, and Personal Advisor to the President.

Loyal advocate for Human Rights, her struggle in favor of women’s human rights is strengthened when realizing herself what it means to be an immigrant, to which she says: "Our female gender throughout all of history has had many difficulties and the condition of immigrant doubles the vulnerability. If at the fact of being immigrant we add the fact of being female, one is much more exposed to the discrimination and inequality.”

Elsa the attorney. She worked as Personal Advisor to the President for women’s equality, designed and implemented the first plan for equal opportunity in the country. She was a Colombian Delegate at the United Nations and OAS, in the commission for women’s participation. When dealing with the controversial issue of domestic violence, she was very emphatic and overwhelming in saying: “Murdering a woman is murdering a home, and murdering a woman and a home is to murder a society. Violence cannot keep silencing our gender. If we all denounce together, unite, we empower and legitimize our rights, and we don’t become victims of that violence that harms society so much.”

A human being with strong spiritual values, with a positive and transforming energy, Elsa Gladys Cifuentes submerges us in the spirituality that guides her life. She considers herself a believer of God and of firm faith; she carries in her heart the example of her mother, who with will and effort raised her 10 brothers and planted in her the most beautiful example improvement. A professional with social sensibility that finds in servicing the community her purpose in life, shares with us that being far from her homeland, her family and her affections, has forged in her a more understanding attitude, maternal and embracing towards her countrymen. And it is here, when her sensitivity unavoidably comes to light and confides in us that “my soul shudders every time I hear the noise of the train or the sound of a plane taking off. It makes me reminisce of the thousands of Colombians who leave their country, pack their bags filling them with sorrows and loneliness. They come to work long shifts in the hope of sending money home to their families.”

With the support of more than 300 volunteers in the tri-state area, she donates her time to help those facing the anxiety and fear of being deported; she visits hospitals, jails, makes calls of encouragement to those who suffer loneliness and displacement. Her collaborative management promotes initiatives among Colombian businessmen and makes recreation areas and space for creativity available to young talent on the grounds of the Colombian Consulate. As an educator and professor, she recognizes the importance of preserving art as a legacy for future generations and invites them to explore new paths through knowledge, and empowerment as a way to break down barriers of inequality.

The eyes of this leader light up for the passion and compromise that comes out of the work she does and in words that incite action, she says: we are not a regular consulate; we are a consulate with the warmth of home, social sense and responsibility for country.

Inspired by her wisdom we asked her, how would she like to be remembered, to which she answered: “I want to be remembered as a humanist woman, a humble person that is proud of her gender; a woman of faith and principles, who knows how to forgive and ask for forgiveness.”

Liderazgo político, social y humanitario.

Con la esperanza de un día soleado, la fría mañana de invierno en Nueva York, se tornó cálida y apacible, tanto por el resplandor de la hermosa chimenea que entre cristales adornaba el gran salón, como por la presencia de una mujer cuya sencillez, calidez humana y espiritualidad, hizo sentir al equipo de LATINO SHOW MAGAZINE, como en casa.

Elsa Gladys Cifuentes Aránzazu. Humanista por excelencia, abogada de profesión, especializada en Derechos Humanos y Gerencia Social, con estudios en Derecho Administrativo, Contratación Laboral y Gestión Pública, autora de los proyectos de ley de Bienestar Animal y de Buen Uso de los Recursos Naturales y Ecosistemas; solo algunos de los méritos que delinean el perfil profesional de quien desde Agosto del 2011, se convierte en la primera mujer en desempeñar el cargo de Cónsul General de Colombia en Nueva York. Nació en Pereira, la capital de Risaralda, una de las ciudades más importantes del “eje cafetero” de Colombia. Es precisamente allí donde también nace y se desarrolla su carrera política, ocupando diferentes cargos en el sector público nacional como Concejal de Pereira, Diputada, Gobernadora de Risaralda, Senadora de la República de Colombia y Consejera presidencial.

Fiel defensora de los Derechos Humanos. Su lucha en favor de los derechos de la mujer se fortalece al sentir en carne propia lo que significa ser inmigrante, por lo que afirma: “Nuestro género femenino a través de toda la historia ha tenido muchas dificultades y la condición de inmigrante dobla la vulnerabilidad. Si al hecho de ser inmigrante le sumamos el ser mujer, uno está mucho más expuesto a la discriminación y a la desigualdad.”

La abogada Elsa se desempeñó como Consejera Presidencial para la equidad de la mujer, diseñó y puso en marcha el primer plan de igualdad de oportunidades en su país. Fue delegada por Colombia ante las Naciones Unidas y la OEA, en la comisión de participación de la mujer. Al abordar el tema controversial de la violencia doméstica, fue muy enfática y contundente al decir: “Asesinar a una mujer, es asesinar un hogar y asesinar a una mujer y un hogar, es asesinar una sociedad. La violencia no puede seguir silenciando nuestro género. Si denunciamos a tiempo, nos solidarizamos, empoderamos y legitimamos nuestros derechos, y no nos volvemos víctimas de esa violencia que tanto daño ha hecho a la sociedad.”

Un ser humano con profundos valores espirituales, con una energía positiva y transformadora, Elsa Gladys Cifuentes nos sumerge en la espiritualidad que guía su vida. Se considera una mujer creyente en Dios y de fe firme, lleva en su corazón el ejemplo de su madre, quien con voluntad y esfuerzo levantó a sus diez hermanos y sembró en ella el más hermoso ejemplo de superación. Una profesional con sensibilidad social que encuentra en el servicio a la comunidad, su propósito de vida, nos comparte que la lejanía de su tierra, de su familia y de sus afectos ha forjado una actitud más comprensiva, maternal y arropadora hacia sus compatriotas. Y es aquí, cuando de manera inevitable su sensibilidad aflora y nos confiesa: “mi alma se estremece al escuchar el ruido del tren o el despegue de un avión. Esto me recuerda los miles de colombianos que dejan a su país, cargando sus maletas de tristezas y soledades. Vienen a trabajar largas jornadas, con la esperanza de poder enviar una remesa para sus familias”

Con el apoyo de más de 300 voluntarios en toda el área tri-estatal, dona su tiempo para ayudar a los que enfrentan la angustia y el miedo de la deportación, visita hospitales, cárceles y hace llamadas de aliento a los que sufren la soledad y el desarraigo. Su gestión participativa promueve iniciativas entre empresarios colombianos y pone a disposición de jóvenes talentos, espacios de esparcimiento y creatividad en la sede consular. Como educadora y catedrática, reconoce la importancia de preservar el arte como legado para generaciones futuras y les invita a explorar nuevos caminos a través del conocimiento, como vía de empoderamiento para derribar las barreras de la desigualdad. Se iluminan los ojos de la líder por la pasión y el compromiso que desprende la labor que realiza y en palabras que motivan a la acción, afirma: “No somos un consulado común y corriente, somos un consulado con calor de hogar, sentido social y responsabilidad de país.”

Inspirados por su sabiduría le preguntamos cómo le gustaría ser recordada, a lo que respondió: “Quiero ser recordada como una mujer humanista, una persona sencilla que se siente orgullosa de su género. Una mujer de fe y de principios, que sabe perdonar y pedir perdón.”
